I think it is at least eight years since I was pointed in the direction of Perfect Paws when I asked some local obedience competitors at a dog show for recommendations for a dog training school after three unsatisfactory attempts at finding one after relocating to the Cape. It was an excellent recommendation and, when I asked for the credentials of the teachers (i.e. what had they achieved with their own dogs?), I was rather embarrassed at the success level that I had apparently dared question. However, I will add there are plenty of imposter trainers out there so it’s a valid question.
I have now trained four Bouviers with Gillian and Lesley over the years and we (me and the Bouvs) are still a work in progress but, I can say that this is the school where I have had most measurable success in that exercises that I never mastered in over a decade with a previous school in Gauteng (that was also highly recommended), have been accomplished under this tutelage in either weeks or months.
At the start I was aiming to make up a Bouvier into an obedience champion as this has not been achieved in South Africa. I realize now that this was quite ambitious and it is still elusive – but I haven’t given up. I had no idea how much work that would take, especially to undo my old habits but I am now up to B Class level with my two older Bouviers and have just started one of the young ones on the competition ladder where she qualified in her class in her first two competitions.
I enjoy the training classes and my dogs love going to school. There is a wide age range of pupils –dogs and humans – and we have a lot of fun. Many have become friends too and most people come for the enjoyment, very few of us compete. Dog school is one of my main social activities as a pensioner and it means I have to travel from near Worcester to Durbanville but the effort is absolutely worth it.

My beloved GSD, Knight, and I, Inky Dresner (aka Louise Frost), have been attending training at Perfect Paws for almost 5 years. It is definitely our weekly therapy session and it is still undecided who gets or needs the most training – probably me! We simply love it! When I tell Knight we’re going to ‘school’ to see Gillian and his friends, on a Tuesday morning, he leads me to his leash and collar and simply sparkles with excitement accompanied by a lot of vocal energy.
